Diabetes awareness and prevention programme

The AGR, in partnership with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, the Rwanda Diabetes Association as well as the National Youth Council, and under the funding of the World Diabetes Foundation, is implementing a two year project. Its aim isto prevent the rise of type 2 diabetes and promote healthy lifestyles among the youth in 14 districts (Kicukiro, Nyarugenge, Rubavu, Gasabo, Musanze, Ruhango, Muhanga, Rusizi, Nyagatare, Kirehe, Kayonza, Huye, Bicumbi and Burera).

The programme kicked off in January 2018.Since, activities have been carried in five schools per district, adding up to 70 schools in total. The first part consisted in training school clubs on type 2 diabetes and implementing  strategies to prevent getting diabetes. As a second step, trained clubs interacted with the community by conducting activities which informed the youth on healthy eating choices and lifestyle which prevents diabetes.

After carrying awareness activities in schools and in communities, students organised a competition in order to assess the clubs’ level of awareness. The final competition was heldin 4 sites to facilitate student transportation. After presenting their activities, the five best performing clubs were awarded.

Early 2019, a refresher training for peer educators was organized to evaluate the project’s progress and introduce new strategies to deliver more effectively the work in each districts.
